Weekly News #24 | Updates Worth Your Attention 👀

Apple and Google agreed on a long-term partnership. Apple will use Gemini models and Google’s cloud infrastructure for Siri and other AI-powered features under the Apple Intelligence umbrella. After years of criticism for lagging behind in AI integration on devices, this move signals that Apple is likely to accelerate AI-driven updates across its devices in the near future.
What makes the decision notable is that Apple has several ongoing antitrust lawsuits with Google. The company was also known to have been considering OpenAI and Anthropic for model integration. So this choice came as a surprise for most of us.
The agreement has already raised monopoly concerns, as Google would now extend its reach beyond Android and Chrome into Apple’s devices and software ecosystem. One of the loudest critics so far has been Elon Musk. 🙃

While the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed yet, Apple bringing its hardware dominance and Google supplying models and infrastructure might reshape the balance of power among tech giants. 👀

Last week, many Instagram users received password reset emails they never requested. This brought attention to claims that the email addresses, names, phone numbers, usernames, and user IDs of 17 million users had been compromised in a cyberattack.
Instagram denied the allegations in a post on its official X account, stating that they fixed an issue that allowed password reset requests to be generated by external apps.

However, reports that the data was simultaneously being offered for sale in underground forums have fueled further suspicion. As always: enabling 2FA won’t hurt. 🫆
